What's it like to work here...
Find out about some of the people who work here at Nottinghamshire YMCA...
Conor has worked with our day camps team for the last few years. This year he took the opportunity to tackle poverty over 3000 miles away in Togo, with a new group of Y Care International volunteers, through the International Citizen Service.
When he returns Conor plans to start a career in primary school teaching.
Conor said: “It’s sure to be a life-changing experience, and from what I've seen and done so far, it is definitely something I would recommend to anyone looking for a career related to international development or working with young people.
If you are a member of staff with a local YMCA, this is a great chance to develop your personal skills and build your future; at the same time as changing your world and helping to build the futures of young people across the globe.”
Danny started a twelve week work placement with us almost three years ago. He is now five months into his role as Duty Manager at YMCA gym.
He took a placement with us in 2013, looking to start a career in fitness and personal training. During his placement, he learned how to interact with customers on a day-to-day basis. He grew confident in his role and knew he could do more to help the YMCA gym. Once he got his fitness qualification, he started teaching classes.
After his 12 week placement finished, he stayed on as a casual fitness instructor, covering extra shifts.
In 2015, he filled the role of Group Co-ordinator, overseeing several classes. This year, he became Duty Manager for the YMCA gym.
Danny says: “I am so happy to be in this role and I want to keep doing more for the organisation. This year I started the running club and I'm going to work hard to get it off the ground. Watch this space!”
Will and Mark
Will and Mark have been presenting on YMCA digital radio for 2 years. They've learnt loads from the YMCA youth team who run young creatives and radio sessions.
Will and Mark always look to improve their radio skills and keep an eye out for interview opportunities. When one of their favourite actresses, Anne Reid, announced her cabaret tour they were really keen to speak to her.
They travelled to London to meet Anne. They had half an hour booked with the
leading lady, but actually filled an hour with interesting questions and flowing conversation.
Will and Mark were confident, calm and humble – much like their interviewee!
The only difference? At least three generations...
