Frequently asked questions

Do I have to do an induction?

Yes. One of the team will help you to get the best from your membership, show you where everything is and make sure you’re working out safely.

Please book your induction at reception on your first visit or contact us. An induction is included in your membership.

Remember that if you are joining our 1871 membership you will also need to complete the 1871 fundamentals before you start.

Can I just turn up for classes?

Yes. However, we recommend that you pre-book to secure your place as classes are capped. You can book up to a week in advance at reception, by calling us on 0115 952 8803 or online through nottsymca.com/book.

You will need to have registered with the online service before the first time you make a booking. You can do this on the same page - you will need your membership number. This is not the same number that is on your membership card. You will receive it when you join.

Please let us know as soon as possible (at least 24 hours in advance) if you can’t make a class that you have booked so that we can give your place to someone else.

Regular no-shows will result in you not being able to book classes for a period of time.

If you arrive late for a class you may not be able to take part.

What is CrossFit?

CrossFit is constantly varied functional movements performed at high intensity. Much more than that: CrossFit is a global community of affiliates and athletes, and a sport.

Strength and conditioning and CrossFit are at the heart of our 1871 membership. Find out more.

What is strength and conditioning?

Strength and conditioning is used by sports teams and athletes to improve performance and prevent injuries. These goals form the foundation of a programme designed to improve speed, agility, power, endurance, stability and build better movement patterns.

What is 1871?

The 1871 programme is planned by YMCA Coaches. Skilled and experienced, our Coaches have developed a highly effective programme with strength and conditioning and CrossFit at its heart. Each workout is different, and planned ahead of your session. Every workout can be scaled to any ability regardless of whether your goal is to compete, or climb the stairs without stopping for a rest; and no one gets left behind.

We think it’s pretty awesome. Book in for a taster today and try it out for free.

I have a health condition. Can I still use the gym?

We recommend that you take independent medical advice before undertaking any exercise.

After this, talk to a member of our team about your needs and goals. All of our classes are designed so that everyone, regardless of ability, health condition or illness, can take part.

Please also make sure you let your Instructor or Coach know if you have any medical conditions that may affect your ability to exercise safely. Get in touch today to arrange a chat or ask any questions.

What if I lose my membership card?

A replacement can be purchased for £5 from reception.

Can I bring a guest to YMCA gym?

When you become a member of YMCA gym we’ll give you three free guest passes to share with your friends and family. These guest passes are valid for three months from your start date. You must accompany your guest.

The 1871 space and membership is not accessible with a guest pass but anyone can book onto a taster to try out an 1871 workout.

Non-members can also pay a drop-in fee; for which they don’t need to be accompanied by a member.

I’m not a member. Can I still come and work out?

Yes.

Our drop in rate for a daily core membership is £7.

Our drop in rate for a daily 1871 membership is £15.

You will need to have completed a CrossFit fundamentals course, before using the 1871 space.

We also run taster sessions on our 1871 membership so you can try us out for free! #winning

Why do you take my picture when I join?

We use the image for identification purposes and to prevent someone else using your membership in the event that your card is lost or stolen. This picture will not be used for any other purposes without your express permission.

What do you do with my email address?

We store your email address on our membership database so that we can contact you regarding your membership.

When you join YMCA gym, you’ll also be asked if you wish to receive emails with news, information and special offers specifically from YMCA gym but also from the whole of Nottinghamshire YMCA. You can unsubscribe from these at any point. For more information about privacy and data visit this page.

Can I store items in a locker when I’m not using the gym?

We have a limited number of lockers available to hire for £7.50 per month from the gym reception. If these are all hired, you can ask to be added to waiting list.

If you haven’t hired a locker and you leave your belongings overnight we’ll remove them when we do our nightly check. This will incur a £10 charge for overnight storage.

Please note that our lockers do not accept the new £1 coins. You can buy key coins from the gym reception.

What kit do I need to train at YMCA gym?

Wear something you are comfortable in. We just ask that you dress appropriately and wear trainers.

We have a water fountain at YMCA gym so bring a water bottle and stay hydrated!

You can borrow a towel free of charge from reception, however feel free to bring your own. You can store all your kit in the lockers which accept old £1 coins or key coins (available from reception).

How do I join?

Visit our get started page or contact the team.

How do I cancel my membership?

Direct debit memberships can be cancelled by giving at least one full calendar month’s written notice. Give your written notice to reception who can begin to process your cancellation and set up a cancellation appointment with a Duty Manager.

After this, the team can finalise your cancellation and notify you of any outstanding payments and your expiry date.

Please note that you must have completed your minimum time commitment before the cancellation can be processed. See your membership contract for details of terms and conditions.

What happens if I miss a direct debit payment?

Our direct debits are processed by Harlands. If you miss a payment or think you will be unable to pay, you can contact them on 0871 250 2423.

Harlands may charge you a missed payment fee.

Can I upgrade from a core membership to an 1871 membership?

Yes. We’ll add the difference to your current membership for the remainder of the month and increase your direct debit payments in the month after.

If you paid up front for your core membership we’ll work out the difference for an upgrade.

There will be a bit of paperwork but just pop over to reception and we’ll be happy to help.

What if I can’t afford the YMCA gym 1871 membership?

We are working on a scholarship model which will mean that we can contribute to the full cost of an 1871 membership for those that can’t pay the full fee due to circumstances or financial situation. Please talk to us and register your interest as this is still a work in progress.

Where is the timetable?

Here.
If you are looking for 1871 programme, it’s released here.

Do I have to be really fit to participate in your 1871 sessions?

No! Every workout can be scaled to any ability regardless of whether your goal is to compete, or climb the stairs without stopping for a rest; and no one gets left behind.

How often can I train each week?

With an 1871 membership you can attend as many core or 1871 classes as you like. All core memberships allow you to attend as many core classes as you like.

See our timetable for details of classes as well as the schedule for 1871 open gym and details about 24 hour access.

You can use the gym as often as you like.

If your question is how many times should you train each week, this is of course dependent on you as an individual…

If you’re just starting out, begin with a couple of sessions a week and gradually build them up.

We would generally recommend 2-3 sessions per week for health and 4-6 for performance.

These sessions should be varied. For example, one of these could be a recovery session like yoga, walking to work or a leisurely cycle – it’s up to you to find a balance but this is definitely something we can help you with.

Are there certain foods I should be eating now I’m a member of a gym?

This depends on you and your personal goals. How much you bring nutrition into your fitness regime is entirely up to you, and something we can help you with.

If you’re interested in knowing more about how nutrition can affect your energy and performance levels speak to a YMCA Coach.

I’m already a member at another CrossFit affiliate . Do I have to complete the 1871 fundamentals course?

No, not necessarily. Let the team know before your first session and they’ll go through some basics with you to determine whether they’re happy for you to get straight on with training.

You will still have to have a YMCA gym induction which will take around 20mins.

Please can I work at YMCA gym?

We encourage volunteers at YMCA gym. Let us know what experience you have and what you would like to be involved with.
